Hellen Barrett's website displays many of the key concerns about Electronic Portfolios

Directors of schools would do well to start at Helen Barrett's website, which gives a summary of the concerns surrounding free websites created by students.  Dr. Barrett is "Dr. EPortfolio"
a) she has a gmail address   eportfolios@gmail.com
b) she maintains a domain address  electronicportfolios.org
c) she has a three-piece process for building digital portfolios using Google products
d) and she has a logo to capture those three Google services.

Principals would do well to look at Dr. Barrett's website for guidance when considering the introduction of portfolios in their schools.

Here's a list of  reports and dissertations about electronic portfolios (29 pages)   http://electronicportfolios.org/ALI/eportfoliolit.pdf

29 pages

Here are some of the concerns that are highlighted in discussions with guidance counselors, teachers , students, parents and principals.

Here's the Esurvey pagewith a link to Dr. Barrett's site

I found a link to Helen Barrett's site by searching "survey of eportfolios" and I clicked on
https://sites.google.com/site/eportfoliosurveys/Home

The "eportfolio surveys" site also pointed to a 2009 book

https://sty.presswarehouse.com/Books/BookDetail.aspx?productID=183392

1.  the book costs $39  (so many principals won't get a chance to read it)
2.  The book does not look at high schools.
Look at the list of things that electronic portfolios help support:

This book examines effects on

student reflection,
integrative learning,
establishing identity,
organizational learning, and
designs for learning supported by technology.

It also describes how institutions have responded to multiple challenges in eportfolio development, from engaging faculty to going to scale.

eportfolios can spark
disciplinary identity,
increase retention,
address accountability,
improve writing, and
contribute to accreditation.

The chapters demonstrate the
applications of eportfolios at
community colleges,
small private colleges,
comprehensive universities,
research universities, and
a state system.

(this list comes from the review of the book  Electronic Portfolios2.0)

The same search of "survey of portfolios" revealed a survey of college students in 2014

The "troubling findings" actually have a positive message

Comment:  THIS IS A GOOD THING!   If a minority of students are using portfolios, that will show that those students will stand out.   Parents, students who use portfolios will be the outliers.
